Parents
You can apply to bring your parents and grandparents to Canada using the Family Class sponsorship and the Super Visa program. If both the sponsor and sponsored relative meet the criteria, your application is accepted. The CIC randomly selects thousands of applicants a year to be granted permanent resident status.
To sponsor your parent or grandparent, you must be:
a Canadian Citizen or a Permanent Resident of Canada or person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act
- currently residing in Canada
- a minimum of 18 years of age
- able to prove that you can support your parent or grandparent financially upon arrival and afterwards by providing food, clothing, shelter and other needs for everyday living, dental care, eye care and other health needs and education not covered by public health services
- able to ensure that your parents or grandparents will not need to rely on social assistance from the Canadian government
- subject to medical exams, criminal and background checks along with your parent or grandparents
If you sponsor a parent or grandparent to become a permanent resident of Canada, you must agree to be responsible for them and their dependents’ essential needs, starting the day they become a permanent resident. Sponsored relatives, over 19 years of age, and the sponsor must sign an agreement that states the sponsor agrees to provide financial support, for a period of up to 20 years, depending on the sponsored relative and their relationship. The sponsored relative also agrees to “make every effort to support themselves” during this period and after.
